The Call . It saddens us to say that Our Friend, musician and sound engineer Michael Been died on Thursday, after apparently suffering a massive heart attack backstage at the Belgian music festival Pukkelpop. He was 60.
Been first made a name for himself as the founder and leader of Bay Area alt-rock band the Call, who first had a hit in 1983 with their single ‘The Walls Came Down.’ The Call opened for Peter Gabriel on his 1982 ‘Shock the Monkey’ tour and collaborated with him on their 1985 album, ‘Reconciled.’ They also collaborated with Garth Hudson and Robbie Robertson, both of the Band. The Call were active for two decades beginning in 1980, despite a break in the mid-’90s when Been briefly pursued a solo career. Been also put the band on hold, briefly, in 1987 when he appeared as Apostle John in the movie ‘The Last Temptation of Christ.’
Been’s son, bassist Robert Levon Been (who has also gone by the name Robert Turner), co-founded the band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in 1998. Michael took an active interest in his son’s musical career and toured with the band as their sound engineer. He was working with them, at Pukkelpop, when he allegedly suffered the heart attack backstage.
Buddyhead reports that the festival’s organizer says Been received immediate medical aid by an on-site medical team and was then rushed to Salvator Hasselt hospital, where he was later declared dead.
Our hearts and thoughts go out to his friends, family, bands and fans. Condolences have been pouring into the BRMC Facebook page and there’s a memorial on the Call’s official website as well — he will be missed by more than one musical community and by more than one generation of music fans.
Thank you Mr. Been, it was an Honor to have known you.
God Speed…

Missing Persons ARTIST NEWS UPDATE: 3-22-10
Dale Bozzio is Missing AGAIN! Dale Bozzio of Missing Persons Pulls out of “Club 1980’s” tour just after 3 days on the road.
Sat 03/20/10 Club Paradise Buffalo, NY
Mon 03/22/10 Hartman Arena Park City, KS
Thu 03/25/10 Brixton Redondo Beach, CA
Fri 03/26/10 Canyon Club Agoura Hills, CA
Sat 03/27/10 Galaxy Theater Santa Ana, CA
Fri 04/02/10 Back Stage Live San Antonio, TX
Reports say Dale Bozzio kicked her band off the tour bus penniless to make their own way home and abandoning the other groups on the tour including one Hit wonder Tommy Tutone and Goth Poppers Gene Loves Jezebel.
The tour was booked by Artist World Wide, best known for booking Retro and over the hill Rock Bands into Bars across the country. Sources in the Bozzio camp reports their agent took their show money and did not pay for the tour bus, This statement has not been denied or confirmed by the groups agent.
Most promoters didn’t even know this tour had problems until a day before the bands performance.
Even with the Headline act “MISSING” Gene Loves Jezebel and Tommy Tutone did their best to finish up the dates to empty venues across the country.
Talent buyers tell us in a way they’re happy Missing Persons did not show up. 90% of the tour lost money, buyers were just relieved they didn’t have to lose more money by paying the band their contractual guarantee.

Missing Person Missing Rent: Posted Oct 15th 2009 12:35AM by TMZ Staff: The cat is out of the bag — Missing Persons singer Dale Bozzio is out of a home. According to her landlord, Bozzio — who was convicted of animal cruelty in May after 12 cats found in her New Hampshire home had to be put down — was evicted after falling two months behind on rent for her San Fernando Valley pad. The new wave singer allegedly owes $4,400. TMZ spoke to Bozzio, who says she’s vacating the property and will pay what she owes. Bozzio adds she’s moving back to New Hampshire to “pay penance.” That’s right, first pay the landlord and then pay penance.
________________________________________________________________________ NEWS ARTIST UPDATE: 03-08-09
DALE BOZZIO’S CAT CRUELTY CHARGES POSTED SUNDAY, MARCH 08, 2009 AT 2:00 AM Dale Bozzio, singer for 80s New Wave band Missing Persons and former Playboy Bunny, is facing 12 misdemeanors in a trial for animal cruelty charges that began last week A neighbor of Bozzio’s kicked off the trial Feb. 23 by testifying that she observed the singer’s house with dead cats lying around and live animals surrounded by filth, according to the Conway Daily Sun. Last October police raided the singer’s house she was leasing in Ossipee, N.H., which resulted in 12 cats being put down. The paper noted that the law enforcement investigation was aided by the Lakes Region Humane Society, according to a police release. Back in October Bozzio pleaded not guilty to three misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty and that the nine additional misdemeanor charges were for the latest nine cats to be euthanized, police said. Bozzio, who also sang on the Frank Zappa album Joe’s Garage and has toured as a solo artist, said she left the cats in the care of a friend. Joe Nelson, the singer’s manager, told the Conway Daily Sun that Bozzio was in the middle of a move and a friend identified only as Deborah was supposed to be looking after her pets. Bozzio said the friend never showed up. She’s totally pissed. This woman promised her, he said. [Bozzio's] not even talking to her anymore. Nelson said he didn’t think Bozzio would go to jail and that she would probably do a benefit appearance for an animal rescue after the case. “These are a bunch of trumped up charges, Nelson said. It’s a bunch of small-town cops who don’t have anything better to do. He added that, if there are two things she loves more than life itself, they are kids and animals. Bozzio’s lawyer, Dennis O’Connor, echoed Nelson’s comments, telling the paper, I do agree with [Nelson] that there are some circumstances that are behind this, he said. She is an animal lover and an advocate for animals. Bozzio said her strategy is to call on Duran Duran and other music industry associates to help her fight the charges. Bozzio’s trial will resume March 9.

TOUR UP DATE: NONE “THANK GOD”
also known as “FAKEY GOES TO ALABAMA” July 02, 2003, the stage is set for a 80s package to perform at Jannus Landing in St Pete Florida Featuring: BERLIN , GENERAL PUBLIC and, what was a joke, FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD, was not Frankie Goes To Hollywood but an imposter named Davy Johnson who has stolen the name and Copyrighted in the State of Alabama and claims to many to be Holly Johnson’s brother (NOT) I was shocked as were the fans who booed them when they left the stage.
ALL PROMOTES SHOULD READ THIS AND BEWARE BEFORE THEY BOOK THIS DISGRACE OF A BAND CALLING THEMSELVES 80s? POP AND WAVE LEGEND FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD.
To Read More about this train wreck of a band calling themselves “Frankie Goes Hollywood”, represented by Richard Lusting and Lusting Talent Enterprise click on link and read more about this scam!! www.fgth.net Frankie Say… Scam the Public! Frankie Goes to Hollywood, the two-hit-wonder band from the 80s, will play Saturday at Hogue Barmichaels in Newport Beach. Okay go ahead and crack your “what a huge come-down!” jokes now. We’ll wait. Thing is, though, as an article in the just-printed September issue of SPIN magazine points out, this 2000 model Frankie probably ain’t what you think.
First, there are no original members no Holly Johnson, no Paul Rutherford, no Mark O’Toole, no Brian “Nasher” Nash, no Peter Gill. Instead, you get Davey Johnson, Holly’s brother, belting out “Two Tribes” and “Relax” as if it were the Reagan years all over again. Uhhh . . . well, maybe not even that. As writer David J. Prince reveals in his SPIN piece, not only is Davey Johnson not related to Holly Johnson (”Davey” is really one R.D. Turner), but Holly has also neither heard of nor met this “Davey Johnson.” Other disclosures from the SPIN story: Faux Frankies Will Martin and “Davey” both claim to be “great friends” with members of the Original Frankie and that “Davey” would “do anything in the world” for Holly Johnson and former bassist Mark O’Toole even though Holly and O’Toole say they?ve never met Martin or “Davey” before in their lives. “Davey” hits on waitresses and speaks with a Southern drawl, unlike original Frankie Goes to Hollywood front men Holly and Rutherford, who were openly queer (as well as openly British, and they spoke like it, too).
Both Martin and “Davey” claim to have played on Original Frankie’s Welcome to the Pleasuredome album, yet when pressed by Prince, both men say they were left off the 1984 albums credits and can’t name the albums engineer. Pleasuredome producer Trevor Horn (ART OF NOISE), for his part, “adamantly denies ever meeting either man,” while Andy Richards, a session keyboardist on the album, also says he’s “never heard of them in my life. There’s no way these people could have contributed to the album without my knowing it.” Clients handled by Chuck Harris, the Faux Frankie’s manager, include “The Great Regurgitator” and a guy who can fart to the tune of “How Much Is That Doggie in the Window” Prince writes that the Faux Frankies performed more than 200 shows around the States last year, mostly in B-grade clubs and the county-fair circuit. When asked about the Faux Frankies, Holly tells Prince, “What Frankie fan who knew anything about the group could possibly ever believe in a million years that we would play steak houses and county fairs It’s so small-fry and so unstylish.” He also calls the current lineup “losers” and apologizes if any fans feel like they’re being played. If you’re going to Hogue Barmichael?s on Saturday, expect to hear a 15-minute version of “Relax,” with forays into “Purple Haze” and “Enter Sandman.” Perhaps most hilarious of all, the Faux Frankies hope to eventually sign to their “favorite label” Master P’s hardcore hip-hop imprint No Limit. Can they get away with this Apparently so for now. “Davey,” Prince reports, can legally do business as Frankie Goes to Hollywood in Alabama, where he’s incorporated under that name (this doesn’t, however, give him total legal ownership of the Frankie Goes to Hollywood moniker, for which he’d need a federal trademark and which the Original Frankie never obtained). The Alabama documents make the Faux Frankie appear to be authentic, though. The only way to stop them, Prince writes, would be for the Original Frankie to fight back with lawsuits, but Paul Rutherford tells the SPIN reporter they’re far too splintered to do so. Essentially, this New Frankie Goes to Hollywood is a tribute band masquerading as the real deal, (RIP OFF) as if Wild Child, a popular act on the nostalgia circuit, actually started calling themselves the Doors. The Faux Frankies have been through OC before. They played a show at Hogue’s in February, and Hogue’s owner David Cho told the Weekly that they generated a respectable turnout of around 80 paying customers and, surprisingly, zero complaints from patrons over the band’s authenticity. Cho says he was skeptical at first, “but their agent provided me with articles, and they played the House of Blues in LA and packed the place.” But Cho says the Faux Frankie’s management also told him that “Davey” was Holly Johnson’s brother when he booked the show, a claim the management and the band, in the SPIN piece now denies. When contacted by the Weekly, Faux Frankie manager Harris, a gruff-voiced gent who’s been in showbiz for 55 years (and who makes it a point to say that the members of the New Frankie are “all straight guys; they’re not gay,” which alone is a pretty revealing comment?a bunch of straight guys singing “Relax, don’t do it, when you wanna cum”?), says, no, “Davey Johnson” was not calling himself Holly Johnson?s brother (contrary to what the SPIN article reports, though he clearly was at some point, since Cho was duped). Harris also says the current Frankie Goes to Hollywood lineup is “no different than the original lineup of the Village People. I don’t know if you know that or not, but there are no original members in the current Village People.” Hmmm. . .
Well, maybe so, but the Village People never really had an easily identifiable-by-name front man; even casual Frankie fans could likely name Holly Johnson. Harris claims that Holly Johnson “doesn’t disapprove” of the Faux Frankies and acknowledges that “40 to 50 percent of people who come to the shows believe that they’re the original band,” while quickly adding (before I have a chance to ask him about the percentage of people who’ve demanded refunds) that “when they see them, they’re absolutely blown away.” Harris also, naturally, blames the pesky media for trying to stir up trouble, saying that SPIN’S Prince was “really angry,” that he “had an agenda” and that things Harris told him were “taken out of context.” (Harris does admit that he indeed manages the dude with the musical flatulence.
“That’s not as silly as it seems,” he says. “He makes $250,000 per year doing that.” Pass LowBallAssChatter that Ex-Lax we’ve got ourselves a new career!) So if you’re up for seeing the Faux Frankies on Saturday, go, have a great time, just consider yourselves warned. But as you stand there mouthing, “Relax, don’t do it, when you wanna suck to it/Relax, don’t do it, when you wanna cum,” try to remember another famous line from the annals of rock & roll past: “Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated” (Rich Kane)
